In this tale about the long, slow process of growing up, middle–aged adults Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Dale (John C. Reilly) have been spoiled their entire lives and still live at home with their parents. The two immature men meet for the first time when one man–boy‘s mother marries the other‘s father. They initially hate each other but despite the step–sibling rivalry manage to find out that they are not too different after all. Soon though their general malaise forces cracks to appear in the new family.

As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart, these two middle–aged, immature, overgrown boys will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their flagging parents back together. To pull it off, they must form an unlikely bond that maybe, just maybe, will finally get them out of the house. Over time the step brothers become best friends. Brennan and Dale do their best as they set up job interviews and struggle with the general ins and outs of adulthood.
