Idris Elba takes up arms for "Thor"

20 November 2009

Back in the day no boards of education would accept Idris Elba as he was literally too cool for said schools. True story. And so it goes that Kenneth Branagh‘s "Thor" has been given a massive dose of The Cool with the news that Elba has just signed on to play Heimdell in the Marvel adaptation.

The "Rock‘n‘Rolla" and "The Wire" star will take up arms as ‘the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders‘ – so a mythological bouncer then!

Elba‘s signature is just another in a string of impressive casting coups for the myth/comic mash up. He‘ll be joining Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), and Natalie Portman. And just this week the Warriors Three were signed up with Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, and Stuart Townsend the guys playing Thor‘s personal bodyguard.

The two Stephens pair up for "Under the Dome"

20 November 2009

It‘s little known but Steven Spielberg has wanted to get his Oscar–winning mits on a Stephen King project for many a moon. Ever since 1984, and the abortive "Talisman" project, Spielberg has been itching, nay, gagging to helm a King story. And with the publication of King‘s latest, critically acclaimed, "Under The Dome" he might just get his chance.

Spielberg and DreamWorks TV have optioned the book and are looking to set it up as a HBO mini series, akin to "Taken" and "Band of Brothers". Spielberg will executive produce and is currently shopping the project around to writers. The story is set in a small vacation town in Maine, which is inexplicably covered by an invisible force field that causes the residents to fight for survival, in two warring factions.

Since it was released, "Under The Dome" has been attracting some serious praise. Many claim it‘s King‘s best work for years and even author Neil Gaiman ("Coraline") went so far as to pick it has his favourite tome of the past year.

Hathaway the favourite for "Spider-Man 4"?

19 November 2009

If you happen to be female and between the ages of 20 – 30 then chances are you would have been linked with the role of The Black Cat in "Spider–Man 4" by now. No? Well, it‘s only a matter of time. With Rachel McAdams ("State of Play", "The Time Traveler‘s Wife") having vehemently denied the rumours linking her to the role, and Romola Garai ("Glorious 39", "Atonement") seemingly having started her own rumours, it falls to Anne Hathaway to carry the Spidey torch this week.

According to ‘deep‘ sources working for Deadline Hollywood, Sony have approached Hathaway (Tim Burton‘s upcoming "Alice in Wonderland") to take a lead role in "Spider–Man 4"…and it‘s not Mary Jane as Kirsten Dunst is already on board.

Sony insists no decisions have been made but with the recent spate of Black Cat rumours it‘s safe to assume that the studio has moved quickly to snap up a hot young thing to stop the internet mongerers from going into overdrive!

Sam Worthington to indulge in some "American Crime"

19 November 2009

There‘ll come a time when journos will start reporting news when Sam Worthington (upcoming "Avatar" and "Clash of the Titans" and everything else, ever) will not star in another film and thereby give a chance to other, budding action heroes. Alas, that time is not now and it‘s with some disappointment that we report that Sam Worthington – the man who officially has two mortgages out on 2009 – will headline an adaptation of Radical Publishing‘s "The Last Days of American Crime."

Surprise, surprise this one‘s based on a popular graphic novel from writer Rick Remender. Those guys over at Mania broke the news that Worthington has been brought on board to lend his newly–minted star power to the project.

Here‘s how Radical Publishing describes the story: In the not–too–distant future, as a final response to terrorism and crime, the U.S. government broadcasts a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts. To keep this from the public, the government creates a distraction, installing a new currency system using digital charge cards.

Enter: Graham Brick. A career criminal never quite able to hit the big score, Graham intends to steal one of the charging stations, skip the country and live off unlimited funds for the rest of his life. But the media has leaked news of the anti–crime signal one week before it was to go live…and now Graham and his team have just a few days to turn the crime of the century into the last crime in American history.

J.J. hints at "Star Trek 2" plot details

18 November 2009

With "Star Trek" barely on the shelves on DVD and Blu–ray, talk has, invariably, turned to all things sequels. Sci Fi Wire cornered both J.J. Abrams and writer/producer Damon Lindelof to get the full skinny on the possible "Star Trek 2", what type of plot we can look forward to and if a certain Khan might be making an appearance. Both denied reports that we could see the film pre–2012 what with the fact that a script hasn‘t even been written yet! And Abrams has yet to confirm whether or not he‘ll return to the director‘s chair.

Lindelof did mention however that they‘re interested in playing with time in the sequel. Both Abrams and Lindelof are no strangers to time–bending narratives as their work on "Lost" attests. Says Lindelof: "One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something. And the question that you‘re asking yourself is: Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we‘re not going to tell you." That seems rather mean!

When there‘s a sheer lack of truth out there then you can always rely on the internet to peddle some tasty rumours. One such flight of fancy comes from ComingSoon.net who are suggesting that Abrams could be lining up "Lost" alum Nestor Carbonell as chief villain Khan in the next film. You may remember Carbonell as the Mayor of Gotham in "The Dark Knight".
