Winslet and Cotillard to join Soderbergh's starry cast?

09 February 2010

Is Steven Soderbergh the hardest working director in Hollywood? Last year, the Oscar winner released four films: the two–part epic Che, The Girlfriend Experience and The Informant!. Leaving no time for useless activities like sleeping or eating, Soderbergh has announced that The Informant! star Matt Damon will be joining him again for his latest venture, the action–thriller Contagion.

Jude Law is also set to appear, while arguably the two most sought–after actresses in Hollywood right now, Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard, are in talks to join the star–studded cast.

Written by The Informant! scribe Scott Z. Burns, the plot revolves around the threat posed by a deadly disease, with multiple plotlines – similar to the style of Soderbergh‘s Traffic.

The director is also currently filming the Antonio Banderas and Ewan McGregor–starring Knockout, while he is also working on a Liberace biopic and musical Cleo.

Avatar still giving Box Office competition the blues at no.1

09 February 2010

They say there are only two certainties in this world: death and taxes. Well, we can add a third to this list: Avatar topping the UK Box Office. Yes, eight weeks in and James Cameron‘s sci–fi epic is still number one, pocketing over £4.2 million at the weekend.

Not even Disney‘s return to 2D animation in The Princess And The Frog could topple Cameron‘s Na‘vi, while another animation, Astro Boy, tucks in just behind to take number three. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon are in the middle of the Box Office scrum as Invictus claims fourth with Sherlock Holmes sliding down to fifth.

Mel Gibson‘s big screen return appears short–lived as Edge Of Darkness falls three places to six and Michael Cera is learning to rebel as Youth In Revolt debuts at seven. Alvin And The Chipmunks 2 appears to have finally lost its charm as it plummets seven places to eight, with Meryl Streep‘s It‘s Complicated and George Clooney‘s Up In The Air rounding off the top ten.

Murray answers the call for Ghostbusters 3!

08 February 2010

Rumours were rife that Bill Murray would be making some sort of cameo appearance in the mooted third outing for Ghostbusters and now, gloriously, said rumours have been confirmed by the man himself. In a candid chat with The Mail on Sunday, Murray revealed that he will be taking his bow…as a ghost no less!

Wait. Doesn‘t that mean that everybody‘s favourite parapsychologist will be killed off early on? Yes, Dr. Peter Venkman will be buying the farm early doors to come back later as a wisecracking spectre.

"I‘ll come back in Ghostbusters 3 only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I‘ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.‘ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film," Murray told The Mail.

Cameron finally gets his Box Office Dear John!

08 February 2010

It‘s finally happened. After seven straight weeks at number 1 James Cameron‘s "Avatar" has been knocked off the top spot by (drum roll please) "Dear John" (??). The mushy romance, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried and based on the best–selling novel by Nicholas Sparks (he penned The Notebook too, which might explain it), took an astonishing $32.4 million on its debut and thus setting a new record over the Super Bowl Weekend!

So, those teen girls have finally put pay to Cameron‘s all–conquering Na‘vi but don‘t feel too bad for the uber director – "Avatar" has now grossed some $2.2 billion worldwide to take its rightful place in Box Office history. John Travolta can only dream of such success these days and with "From Paris With Love" he‘ll have to keep dreaming. The all–out actioner, directed by "Taken‘s" Pierre Morel, could only muster a disappointing $8.1 million in its opening weekend. Meanwhile Mel Gibson‘s got enough love for us all but prefers to dish out a cold plate of revenge instead in "Edge of Darkness" at 4.

If you thought it unlikely that Dwayne ‘The Rock‘ Johnson would ever don a tutu and a pair of glittery wings then think again as "Tooth Fairy" is still sticking around at 5 with Kristen Bell getting down with the locals in Disney‘s "When In Rome" at 6.

Denzel Washington is rather slavishly keeping hold of his hardback in "The Book of Eli" at 7 and The Dude imbibes at 8 as "Crazy Heart" debuts in the chart. Starring the Oscar–tipped Jeff Bridges, "Crazy Heart" took $3.6 million from a limited release. Paul Bettany has certainly not been tipped for his star turn in the angel–bashing Legion, which falls three places to 9 and Robert Downey Jr. has followed the breadcrumbs all the way down to number 10 this week in "Sherlock Holmes".
